Mafwa Theatre is a community arts organsation bringing refugees, people seeking asylum and settled communities together through drama, movement, gardening and co-creation. Since 2018 we have offered free weekly creative groups in one of England’s most deprived areas, building long-term community relationships and supporting confidence, wellbeing and connection.

Our practice is shaped by the people we work with. We collaborate closely with local refugee support organisations and community partners to create trauma-informed, co-created spaces. Since 2018, over 700 local residents and 400 people from migrant backgrounds have taken part in our work.

routing/re:rooting grows directly from Kuluhenna Drama, our weekly women’s drama group which has been running since 2017 and is the foundation community for this project. The figures below illustrate the group’s reach and impact.
